A Study on Korean Aesthetics of the Calligraphic Style of Jikji

<직지jikji>는 활자로 인쇄된 문서임과 동시에 그 경전을 이루고 있는 문자의 쓰임은 ‘서예’라는 요소를 포함하고 있다. 모든 문자(文字)에는 그 형태와 쓰임에 일정한 격식(格式)과 풍격을 지니고 있다. <직지> 서체의 연구는 곧 그 당시의 문화코드를 파악하는 열쇠가 될 수 있으며 당시의 사회적 현상과 미의식의 가치를 분석해볼 수 있는 결정적 매개물이 될 수 있을 것이다. 한국의 글씨는 중국의 고대 글씨와 일맥상통하는 조형적 특징을 가지고 있다. 은주(殷周)시대의 금석문과 한국의 토속적 글씨는 매우 많은 공통점을 가진다. 고대인의 조형에 나타난 미의식에 있어서는 중국과 한국이 공통점을 가지고 있으며, 한국은 고대의 그 원형성을 잃지 않고 면면히 유지해왔다고 할 수 있다. <직지>는 중국 고대의 초기 문자 시대의 자연성과 닮아 있으며, 북위서풍과 호환성이 깊으며, 의심할 여지없이 고신라의 서풍의 영향 하에서 만들어진 것임을 알 수 있었다. 중국 고대의 글씨와 북위글씨의 자유분방함, 고신라 시대의 스타일은 모두 무(巫)라는 같은 토양에서 자라난 결실로, 자연성과 질박함과 높은 예술적 가치를 대변해 주고 있다. 중국 고대 은상대(殷商代)의 갑골문(甲骨文)과 신라시대 경상도 울진에 세워진 봉평비(鳳坪碑), 충북 단양에 세워진 단양적성비(丹陽赤城碑)의 자유분방함에서 <직지>로 이어지는 이러한 특징이 바로 고전의 ‘자연미(自然美)’로써, 중국 고대 서예작품과, 한국의 토속적 서예작품에서 공통적으로 보여 지는 ‘조형미(造形美)’로 한국적 미의식인 것이다.

Jikji is a document of printing type written in calligraphic style. According to the shape and use, each character has a certain formality and manner. A study on the calligraphic style of Jikji is the key to know the cultural trend of the time and at the same time makes us to analyze the social atmosphere and the value of aesthetics of the time. The calligraphy of Korea and that of China in ancient time have a common characteristic in formation. The calligraphic style of the Yin and Zhou periods of China and the folk writing of Korea are very similar to each other. In aesthetics appeared in the formation of the ancient time, Korea and China have something in common. Korean writing has kept the original form without a break. The calligraphy of Jikji is analogous to the 'natural beauty' of the ancient writing of China and profoundly related to the calligraphy of the Northern Wei. Without doubt, it was influenced by the calligraphy of the Old Silla. Being unrestricted of the calligraphy mentioned above that came from magical arts shows a high artistic value having nature and simplicity. The unrestricted characteristic of Jikji that succeeded to the oracle bone inscriptions of the Yin, the Bongpyeong stele of the Old Silla at Ulgin, Kyeongsang province, and the Jeokseong stele of the Old Silla at Danyang, Chungbuk province, is just the 'natural beauty' of the old time. Also, it is Korean aesthetics, which is the 'formative beauty' displayed in the folk writing of Korea and the ancient writing of China.
