쾌락주의의 계보와 공리주의

The history of hedonism and utilitarianism

이 글은 공리주의의 기원으로서 쾌락주의를 올바로 이해하는 데 목적을 두고 있다 공리주의에 대한 많은 오해들은 쾌락주의에 대한 이해가 부족한 데 기인한다 따라서 공리주의를 비롯하여 쾌락을 도덕적 선으로 여기는 도덕 이론들을 정당화하기 위해서는 쾌락주의를 올바로 이해하기 위한 노력이 요구된다 쾌락주의는 고대 그리스의 소크라테스와 소피스트들의 대화에서부터 출발한다 윤리학은 자연 세계에 대한 관심으로부터 인간의 삶에 대한 관심으로 전환되는 이 시기에 처음으로 등징하였다고 볼 수 있다 플 라톤의 대화편에 등장하는 인물들의 대화에서 발견할 수 있는 특정은 자연 세계의 원리를 인간 사회에 그대로 적용하려고 했다는 점이다. 이런 노력은 보편적 실재를 바탕으로 객관적 선이 이성에 의해 발견될 것 이라는 선념을 전제로 하고 있다 윤리학은 이 신념을 체계화한 플라톤의 사상으로 인해 오랫동안 혼란을 겪게 된다 그 혼란의 중심에는 쾌락을 도덕적기치로 인정하려는 태도를 수치스럽고 비이성적인 것으로 여겼던 철학적 세력이 있었다 쾌락주의를 기원으로 하는 오늘날의 도덕 이 론들은 쾌락에 대한 편견과 오해 를 바로잡음으로써 정당성을 보다 갖출 것으로 기대된다 쾌락주의를 올바로 이해하는 것은 쾌락주의의 철학사적 계보를 추적하는 것에서부터 시작할 수 있다 가장 대 표적인 오늘날의 쾌락주의는 공리주의 이다 공리주의에 대한 정당화는 쾌락을 궁극적인 목포로 삼았던 이론들이 플라톤적 전통과 맞서 겪었던 논쟁을 재구성하고 올바로 해석함으로써 가능할 것이다

The purpose of this study is to understand hedonism which is the origin of utilitarianism. In many cases, the misunderstanding of utilitarianism has come from a lack of understanding of hedonism. Therefore, in order to justify moral theories that considers pleasure a moral good, hedonism needs to be understood properly. Hedonism began in conversation between Socrates and Sophists. Ethics arose at this moment when the main philosophical concern of that time changed from the natural world to hurnan life. The main feature of the Dialogues of P!ato is the fact that they were trying to apply the rule of nature to hurnan society. This attempt is based upon the belief that objective goodness could be recognized by human reason. Since Plato systemized this be!ief, ethics has been confused for a long time. In the core of the confusion, there was a philosophical force that thought of hedonism as shameful and irrational. Modern moral theories based on hedonism could be justifìed by rectifying the prejudice and misunderstanding. We can start this work by tracing the history of hedonism. Utilitarianism is the most representative type of hedonism today Utilitarianism can be justifìed through reconstructing the hedonistic conversation which is against the tradition of Plato.
