Korean university students’ use of vocabulary learning strategies

This study investigates the relationship between the vocabulary proficiency and vocabulary learning strategies. The data for this study were collected from a questionnaire and a vocabulary test tool. Forty university students participated in this survey. An analysis of the results revealed several important points. The higher vocabulary achievement level students have, the more positive attitude they have in using vocabulary learning strategies. In addition, there were some differences in using vocabulary learning strategies among the groups. The advanced group tended to use a little wider range of vocabulary learning strategies more actively than the lower group. This study implies that teaching vocabulary learning strategies can be an effective way to expand a learner’s lexical knowledge.
