일제강점기‘금석병용기’에 대한 일고찰

A Study on‘ Kinsekiheiyouki(Chalcolithic Period)’under Japanese colonization

일제강점기 일본인 고고학 연구자들에 의해 사용되기 시작한‘금석병용기(金石倂用期)’라는 용어는 식민사관, 그 중에서도 타율성론을 증명하기 위해, 고고학이 제국주의의 도구로 사용된 전형적인 사례로 비판받고 있다. 지금까지 몇몇 연구에서‘금석병용기’에 대한 비판이 이루어지기는 하였지만, 그에 대한 구체적인 검토는 그리 많지 않다. 본고는 일제강점기부터 1960년대까지 사용되었던‘금석병용기’용어의 등장과 그 의미에 대한 검토를 목적으로 하고 있다. ‘금석병용기’라는 용어는 일본고고학에서 먼저 등장하게 된다. 일본의 선사시대인 죠몽시대와 뚜렷한 금속기문화를 가지고 있는 고분시대의 중간에 자리 잡고 있는 야요이시대의 성격이 1930년대부터 밝혀지기 시작하면서, 석기와 공반하여 금속기가 출토되는 야요이시대의 문화적인 성격을 규정하기 위한 용어로 사용되게 된다. 그러나 이러한 등장배경을 가진‘금석병용기’라는 용어는 일제강점기 한반도의 선사시대에 적용되면서 그 내용과 의미하는 바가 달라지게 된다. 김해패총 발굴보고서 발간을 기점으로‘금석병용기’라는 용어가 사용되기 시작하며, 당시의‘금석병용기’는 이후 비판의 대상이 되는 타율성론의 내용과 함께 순수한 의미에서의‘석기와 금속기의 병용’이라는 개념을 어느 정도 포함하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 이후 藤田亮策등은 식민지라는 개념과 금석병용기를 동일의 단계에서 이야기하며 식민사관을 증명하기 위한 도구로서의‘금석병용기’개념이 정립되게 된다. 일제강점기의 일본인에 의한 고고학 조사의 결과로 등장한‘금석병용기’의 개념과 시대에 따른 변화를 정리, 검토하는 것은 지금의 한국고고학의 형성과정을 이해하는 하나의 바탕이 될 것이다.

The term ‘Kinsekiheiyouki(Chalcolithic Period, 金石倂用期)’began to be used by the Japanese archaeologists in Japanese colonization and has been criticized as a typical example of the colonial history sense, especially in order to prove the‘ heteronomy’archaeology has been used as a tool of the Japanese imperialism. Until now, some researches are done in the criticism of‘ Kinsekiheiyouki’, but not much concrete review. The purpose of this paper is examination of the emergence of the term ‘Kinsekiheiyouki’and a review of its use during Japanese colonization. The term‘ Kinsekiheiyouki’first appeared in Japan archaeology, not Korean archaeology. The term ‘Kinsekiheiyouki’is used to explain the nature of the Yayoi period which be used stones and metals at the same time. But ‘Kinsekiheiyouki’in Korea under Japanese colonization has a different meaning. ‘Kinsekiheiyouki’first appeared in report on excavation of Kimhae shell mound in archaeology of Korea and signified penetration of cultural elements by Chinese colonial rule in prehistoric times. And it can be said that the central figure of‘ Kinsekiheiyouki’was Huzita Ryosaku(藤田亮策). To understand the concept and use of ‘Kinsekiheiyouki’which appeared as a result of apanese imperialism will be based in understanding of the formation process of archaeology of Korea.
