Enrichment of Human Life Transcending Rational Restraints

인간을 정의하는 중요한 방법들 중 하나는 인간을 합리적인 존재로 간주하는 것이다. 그리고 과학은 그러한 합리성의 전형이라고 주장된다. 그러나 과학사와 과학철학 분야에서 이뤄진 최근의 발전은 우리가 좀 더 실재적인 형태의 과학을 성취하기 위해서는 고전적인 선험적 합리성의 모형에 입각한 과학의 합리적 모형을 넘어설 필요가 있음을 강력히 암시 한다. 우리는 좀 더 적합한 과학적 합리성의 모형을 발전시키고자 노력할 필요가 있다. 우리는 합리성의 엄격한 한계들을 넘어서서 소위 “합리적임”을 추구해야 한다. 이 논문은 그러한 “합리적임”의 개념이 우리가 과학과 인간의 삶에 대한 전체론적인 구도를 갖는데 어떤 중요한 역할을 수행하는지 보이고자 한 시도이다.

One of the important ways to define human beings is to see them as rational beings. And science is held to be the epitome of rationality. But the recent developments in History and Philosophy of Science seem to strongly suggest that, in order to have a more realistic picture of science, one needs to go beyond the rational model of science founded on the classical a priori model of rationality. We need to strive to develop a more adequate model of scientific rationality. One has to go beyond the strict confines of rationality and look for, what I call “reasonableness”. In this paper an attempt is made to show how the notion of reasonableness plays an important role in having a holistic picture of science and human life as well.
