A study on New Words Policy Proposal

This paper is Although previous researchers have pointed out several problems relating to new words and presented solutions and methods, it is true that there has been no discussion about how policy on new words is established. Therefore, the present writer thought that the general plan to solve emerging problems on new words needed to be discussed from the viewpoint of New Words Policy. This paper examined other countries' policies and previous studies on new words to arrange New Words Policy based on the necessity of this in my own way. Through these examinations, the present writer organized some policies including 'principles of making new words'. The main points are summarized like following. 1) Let us make in order of old words, original words, and Korean Chinese, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese Chinese when it is necessary to make new words. 2) Let us establish more legally binding ‘Basic Rule on Korean Words’, and lead ‘National Korean Institute’ to the system controlled by the prime minister. This adds the importance of Korean language symbolically. 3) Let us coin new words setting up the professional committee, and use the officially declared new words at least in the public sector. 4) Let us teach the contents about new words, such as principles of making new words and how to coin new words, actively and vitally in the school grounds. 5) Let us set the specific standard for new words coined, and update a dictionary annually. This extends the usages of new words. It is hoped that this study will stimulate further investigation in New Words Policy.
