초등학생들의 고안철자를 통한 초등 영어 철자 지도에 관한 연구

The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean elementary school students' invented spellings and to suggest pedagogical implications on how to teach English spellings more effectively to Korean elementary students. Sixty one 5th graders' and fifty eight 6th graders' invented spellings were examined in this study. The data came from the researcher's previous study on elementary students' writing based on genre approach. For the analysis, the correct spelling rates of 10 words were calculated and the students' invented spellings were analyzed based on Gentry (982)'s developmental stages of spelling. Korean EFL students' developmental stages of spelling were in between the phonetic stage and the transitional stage. And Korean EFL students seemed to skip the precommunicative stage and the semiphonetic stage. Also a trace of Ll influence was found in Korean EFL students' invented spellings. Based on the results of the study, several pedagogical implications for more effective spelling Instruction are suggested.
