Critiques and Reflections on Korean Colleges Focusing on Relationships among Students

본 연구는 지금까지 주로 소수의 복학생이나 군인들을 대상으로 질 적연구망법으로 수행된 군대와 대학과의 관계에 대한 연구물들을 확장 전국단위의 대학생 들을 대상으로 설문조사와 인터뷰로 대학에서의 선후배 관계 를 중심으로 한 대학문화 분석을 목적으로 한다 기존의 연구 결과와는 달리 한국 대학생들은 남녀공학대학교와 여자대학교 구분 없이 선후배간 위계적인 문화를 형성하고 있으며， 그것은 욕설과 폭력까지도 포함하는 것이 다 대만 대학생들과 비교한 한국 대 학생 들의 두드러진 특정은 과도한 음주인데， 이것은 한국 대학 내 복학생의 존재， 집단문화， 서열적 인간관계 등과 교차하면서 한국 대학의 비민주성을 만들어 낸다. 한국 대학생들이 선후배간 비민주적 관계를 수용하는 데에는 신자유주의적 주체로서 '스펙 쌓기'에 대한 욕망이 있다고 분석된다 신자유주의적 맥락에서 는 대학 내 인맥조차 '관리' 되어야 할 '스펙'의 일부가 된다 연구자들은 대학의 보다 적극적인 신입생 교육으로의 개입 ， 복학생 교육， 남학생들의 졸업 후 군입대 등을 제안하면서 한국 대학의 비민주성 극복을 주장한다

This study extends the existing qualitative research on the relationship between 'returriees' and college culture to conduct quantitative research including nation-wide college students. Contrasting to the existing research findings, the current researchers found that there is little differences, if any, between co-oo college and women-only students over the experiences with senior-jw1ior relationship. Regardless of their gender, Korean students seem to establish hierarchical relationship between senior and junior, and sometimes this relationship implies violence and calling names by seniors. Most obvious characteristic of Korean students compared to their Taiwanee counterparts is their 'conspicuous' drinking. Their conspicuous drinking intersects with returnee's existence, Korean collectivism, and hierarchy to make campus culture undemocratic. Researchers suggest that colleges take a more active part in freshmen's orientation, returnee's so-called 're-hab' program, and conscription after college graduation to overcome the problem
