본 논문은 우리나라의 십장생도에 내재된 상징적 이미지에 관한 연구이다. 십장생도는 장수를 상정하는 열 가지 사물 등， 즉 해， 구름， 산， 물， 바위 ，학， 사슴， 거북， 소나무， 영지로 구성되어져 있다. 십장생도의 사상적 배경을 보면 현세복락적 인생관과 철학어 징수길상의 상징적 이미지로 잘 반영되어있다. 십장생이 가진 장수길상의 의미는 자수， 도자기， 나전칠기와 같은 공예문양으로 널리 사용되어 우리 민족의 장수길상의 관념을 대표하는 상징이 되었다. 십장생도 속에 보이는 모든 자연물은 그것이 현실로 존재하고 있는 것이라 할지라도 화면에는 이미 본래의 자연이 아닌 인간적으로 해석되고 탈바꿈된 자연임과 동시에 작가의 사상과 정서를 매개하는 상징물인 것이다. 샤머니즘적 토속신앙과 유교， 불교 도교의 사상적 영향은 다양한 십장생의 圖像을 초래하였는데， 그 가운데서도 일관한 사상적 흐름은 現뼈福樂主義라는 맥이었다. 壽福과 邱思想、을 나타내주는 십장생도는 長壽와 관계되는 動物， 植物， 그 밖의 자연물들을 情靈뿔拜 思想으로 표현함으로써 인간의 長壽와 多塵無病， 夫歸琴쫓， 富貴， 出世등을 가져다준다고 믿게 된 것이다. 이처럼 십장생도에는 현세 사람들의 어떠한 삶의 고달픔이나 슬픔을 잊게 하고 삶의 희망을 줄 수 있는 길상적 의미를 많이 내포되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 장수길상을 표현하고 있는 장생물의 상징적 이미지는 항상성， 불변성， 신령성 등 또 다른 이미지를 내포하면서 십장생도의 화제와 도상으로 표현되었다. 무엇보다 십장생도가 지니는 특징은 자연을 그대로 재현하는 가시적인 묘사나 소재들의 생태적 외형상보다 그 속에 내재된 상징적 의미를 더 중요시 여긴 점을 들 수 있다.
