The Analysis of Korea's Trade Structure to China

This paper decomposes China's phenomenal export growth along various dimensions. It finds that the export structure is changed dramatically from 1992 to 2006, with China moving out of agriculture and apparel and into electronics and other more sophisticated manufactures. As China moves up the value chain, both its imports and exports have become more sophisticated than in the past. As a result of these shifts, China may be becoming more exposed to fluctuations in the strength of the global economy. Korea's exports to China will be affected by sophistication of China's exports because the ratio of parts and components are so high in exports to China. As a result of changes in China's exports structure, Korea's trade balance with China decreased in 2006 for the first time. This paper finds that the imports increases of parts and components from China, the decrease of processing trade and the increased domestic sourcing may be the important factors in the decrease of Korea' trade balance with China.
