A Study on the Current Status of Free Trade Agreement in Latin America

Korea has recently celebrated a sixth year anniversary since its first Free Trade Agreement(FTA) in history with Chile came into effect. With the conclusion of FTA between the two nations, Korea expected that Chile would play its own roles as a bridge sufficiently for Korea to make inroads into Latin American market. Unlike that expectation, however, its effect upon Korea's market dominance has been reduced according to the current policy of Chile to expand its FTA. Latin America is the area where FTA negotiations are most actively conducted in the world and is also characterized by the formation of diverse economic integrations in each of the subdivided areas of it. Nowadays, Latin America is taking a favorable position in negotiations with Asia so as to restrain the US or EU as a strategy to promote its FTA negotiations. Therefore, in order for Korea to be able to dominate the Latin American market, it is inevitable to continue propelling FTA negotiations with major countries or economic integrations in Latin America adopting an aggressive position on FTA negotiations.
