ChangKeum of Lacquer-Craft : A Study on the Decoration Technique of ChimKeum

Chimkeum technique of Japan began to develop on the basis of Changgeum technique after importing Changgeum crafted products after the Won dynasty Presently, it is having a vogue in the north region and the northeast region, succeeding Ryuk Chimkeum that they uniquely developed under influence of China and Wagima Chimkeum developed in Edo era Among these, Wasima Chimkeum of Ishigawa Hyun in the north region is the greatest place of production of Chimkeum work in Japan, and the reason is in solid Hazi and accurate coating process. Because Chimkeum technique should engrave pattern on coated surface by using Chimkeum chisel, process of Hazi, Hachil, Zeungchil, and Sangchil on Sozi should be thickly done with accuracy. Especially, Hazi layer should be made solidly. If Hazi layer is not solid and coating process is not accurate, Chimkeum chisel reaches Sozi through Hazi and blade of Chimkeum chisel is damaged on engraving pattern. If Sangchil is black, it is easy to engrave pattern just after polishing it, and if several days pass, it is difficult to engrave because coated surface is hard. Especially, it is easy to engrave line and point by using Hwando, but because coating layer is broken, on engraving by using PyounGeoldo, we have difficult in engraving it and chisel is damaged. In the case that Sangchil is red Chaechil, it is not largely different with black one, but because Chaechil mixed with red or white pigment is harder than black one, it is difficult to engrave it and blade of chisel is damaged easily. In the case of newly painted Sangchil without polishing it, it is easier to engrave after several days than just after drying. Because painted surface becomes hard, it is difficult to engrave it after long period passes, and blade of chisel is damaged easily. For Sozi decorated with Chimkeum, any kind of Sozi about log, bamboo, ceramic, matal, and etc is possible according to kind of Chimkeumdo, kind of technique, and increase and decrease of Chimkeumdo. But because Sozi of Dotae and Geumtae is hard, pattern should be engraved shallowly. Main thing of existing Chimkeum mostly is shallow engraving like line. But unique point engraving technique succeeds in expression of smooth taste and cubic effect that cannot be found in Chimkeum, and it is possible to express deep taste and feeling of contents of black-and-white drawing by PyounGeoldo strongly and express content of art to a high degree. Also inlay technique is called as feeling having both of strength peculiar to Chimkeum and deep taste of ShiHwa. Decoration technique of Lacquer Crafts takes many time and effort. Decoration technique of Chimkeum can gain clean decoration in short time over other decoration techniques only if engraving technique is skillful, and it has wide applicable range because it is expressed with a mixture with several decoration techniques. I hope that it is used as simplification of decoration technique and development of modern pattern by integrated with industrial arts field.
