A study on the development of modern ottchiled furniture with wind as its motif

It is a natural instinct for human to pursuit beauty. And it is a human desires to feel beauty and experience happiness through what he/she sees. When their instinctive desires for beauty are satisfied in a space provided for that is on intimate terms with human life, they tend to feel the quality of living become improved and opulent. Therefore, the importance of furniture that is the cardinal ingredient of the structure of the living quarter emerges highlighted. And the inhabitant of a domicile tends to seek for creative and individualistic furniture distinctive from others. This thesis is concerned about the ottchil1) furniture developed in such a way as to have a variety of formative nature, colorful pattern and rich color so that it can play an important role as an important constituent of the dwelling space marked with individuality. In addition, it will also enquire into how to place pieces of furniture painted in traditional ottchil technique with outstanding quality of mothproof, moisture proof, antiseptic and durability in a dwelling space in such an arrangement as to bring out the harmony between traditional beauty with modern one. The thesis is also concerned with the ottchil furniture developed in a special motif of the 'wind.' Prior to pioneering the pieces of the ottchil furniture, a series of close study has been conducted on the structure and the features of various furniture pieces through a number of concerned literature and research materials. Based on the study, the formative art of the furniture has been reconstituted in such in accordance with the features of the ottchiled furniture. In addition, efforts have also been made to grasp the point of the general concept and the inner symbolism of the 'wind,' in order to visualize the intangible 'wind' as it will help exteriorize the furniture into patterns. It is, therefore planned to make good use of the 'wind' as the intermediation of image of the work so as to have enough airs about it to create friendly atmosphere in the open space where human dwells in harmony with the furniture. An emphasis has been put to the form of the furniture shown in this thesis so as to seek after formative elements of curved lines, since they would help permeate cozy atmosphere by making changes to the dwelling space primarily constituted with straight lines, in order to make the liveliness and the dynamism of the 'wind' outstand in the rectangular space which is typical in most living room. The emblematic patterns expressed on the furniture shown in this thesis works are visualized through harmonious arrangement of the landscape and the things in the nature. In order to accentuate the artistic feeling in addition to the decorative effect of the furniture shown in this thesis, the background color of the furniture shown in this thesis has been expressed by repeated applying of various colored ottchils. An attempt has been made to express the spatial feeling of the furniture shown in this thesis through the difference of shading by each ottchil color layer. This study has been made with expectation in mind that the artistic furniture of ottchil ware developed in this thesis will play a prime role in creating modern space characteristic of individuality and thereby becoming popularized in due course of time.
