Chinese styles worked as a source of new inspiration in the history of European arts and designs, and their influence has been recurring continuously until now. In particular, the Chinese mode that began to rose in Europe in the early 20th century provided new energy to modern European design and triggered the advance of modernism. The present study examined the influence and meaning of Chinese culture by analyzing Chinese styles observed in European gem-set craft in the early 20th century in terms of material, design motive and color. The influence of Chinese styles was characterized by the use of materials such as jade, enamel and mother of pearl, and design motives such as Chinese figure and scenary, dragon and Buddhism. In terms of color, black - white - green - blue - red was a representative color combination and in which boldly mixed each other. Chinese styles, which originated with the fusion of European and Chinese culture, brought various changes to gem-set craft in Europe during the early 20th century. Moreover, they did not die out, but the cultural fusion has laid the ground of new aesthetics for comtemporary gem-set craft.
