이 연구는 서양식 공간 연출의 기본 요소인 커트러리(cutlery)의 기원과 분류를 살펴보고 그것을 기반으로 하여 현재의 커트러리 디자인의 올바른 방향을 제시하려는 목적에서 출발 하였다.최근 ‘먹을 거리’가 문화의 아이콘으로 대두되고 있고 그와 함께 테이블 웨어도 변화하고 발전하였다. 이렇게 테이블 웨어가 관심을 받아오고 있는 반면 테이블 웨어와 같이 제시되어야 할커트러리는 디자인이 정리되지 않은 채로 잘못 사용 되어지고 있는 일이 허다하다. 커트러리의기원과 분류가 명확하게 이해 되지 않은 상태에서 커트러리를 현대의 문화에 적용 시켰기 때문이다. 그럼으로 본 연구는 커트러리의 이론적 배경의 중요성을 인식하고 본론의 첫 번째 주제를커트러리의 기원과 분류로 정하였다. 커트러리의 이론적 배경을 살펴 본 후 그것을 토대로 현대의 커트러리 디자인의 올바른 방향을 살펴볼 것이다. 커트러리의 기본적인 조건인 기능과, 테이블 셋팅의 아름다움을 완성 해 줄 미적인 조건이 모두 배합된 커트러리가 바로 커트러리 디자인의 올바른 방향 이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 영국의 금속 공예가 데이비드 멜러(David Mellor)의 작품은 우리가 말하는 커트러리의 올바른 디자인의 견본을 보여준다. 본 연구를 통해 커트러리의이론적 배경을 정확하게 이해하고 올바른 커트러리 디자인의 방향에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 시간을 가져 좀 더 우리의 식사를 즐길 수 있는 계기가 됐으면 하는 바램이다.
This study aimed at examining the origin and various forms and uses of cutlery, the basic element of creating Western dining atmosphere, and then presenting the direction of modern cutlery design. Western food is recently gaining popularity as a cultural icon. However, ordinary people are not well aware of appropriate use of cutlery. This is because cutlery is used without defining its origin, function and form. Therefore, this study perceived the importance of theoretical background of cutlery and set the first section of the main of this thesis as the origin and categorization of cutlery. Based on that, the study suggested the direction of cutlery through the example of a British metal craftsman, David Mellor’s works. It is only when cutlery is beautifully set on the table that the function of cutlery is considered complete. This is a good example of function can be determined by the form. It is hoped that the study helps people to have an accurate understanding of the theoretical background of cutlery and to research new cutlery design.
