A Study on the Symmetric Wood Figure Expressed on Furniture - focusing on the Korean traditional wooden furniture -

The unique figure that appears when lumber is cut down has a value as an artwork since it has an excellent effect in decoration. Wood texture, also called “grain,” is the terminology representing the shape of all natural forms that appear on the tangential section and radial section of lumber. In particular, the traditional wooden furniture of Korea utilized such natural beautiful wood figures for decoration purposes based on left-right symmetry. In order to use the symmetric figure of lumber for decoration purposes, various techniques and methods were developed to manufacture wooden furniture, and the symmetric figure has become the well-known characteristic of Korean traditional wooden furniture. This study aims to suggest a plan that can be applied in modern wooden furniture by analyzing many cases that utilized the symmetric figure that is the creative technique of Korean traditional wooden furniture. In conclusion, development of the technique for cutting down lumber and the applied technology of wood figure made it possible to produce various forms of figure, and it was shown that these technologies can have various applications such as internal materials for construction, indoor wooden products, wood crafts, etc in addition to wooden furniture. For the future, in wooden materials as well as in lumber, more expanded research and commercialization on applications of symmetric wood figure should be done according to use, technique, and method.
