A Study of Dialetical Development on Ceramic History

History of ceramic is a history of civilization. Ceramic has developed along with dialectical interaction with social and economic factors in every country. Discovery of fire's function, ceramic technology accelerated and changed human's life and culture. Appearance of China Porcelain acted the turning point the world ceramic history. It is the clue of new technology and culture and origin of riches. Actually, Chinese borrowed and developed Islam's cobalt and arabesque pattern and made world product. European aspired after the china porcelain and approached scientific methods and economic sources. It was a different viewpoint from the Chinese. Therefore, the code of civilization through ceramic is the hybrid of east and west technology and culture. China's leadership disappeared, Japan and Europe constituted new hegemony in ceramic history. It is unfortune Korean that they had excellent technology and original character, they failed the opportunity in world market. The Industrial Revolution changed ceramic history. Industrial product by machine replaced handmade ceramic, so the value and identity of ceramic flowed in whirls in modern society. The argument of ceramic's value and identity began and continued today. What is it? Craft or Art or Design? The hierarchy of aesthetuc value in ceamic is a standard by the West. Today, it is questioned about ceramic's value and identity, especially department of ceramic craft in university. Ceramic works are complex with their own histories, that must be allowed to grow and change over time. I think ceramic history showed the dynamic dialectic of meaning and value, so we tried to find out new meaning and value of ceramic in contemporary society.
