The Study on Modernized Korean Costume Button Design

The lifestyle changes in the costume advancement process have been advancing along with the function and design befitting of the costume of the time. Although today's modernized Korean costume that once again highlights the value of our things is still equipped with the traditional elements by succeeding the traditional Korean costume, it needs a variety in the shape and function in its design. Accordingly, we sought to present a new opinion on the button design of modernized Korean costume while satisfying the tradition, modernity and decorativeness of Korean costume. Although the relative importance of button in costumes is very low, it plays an important role in determining the elegance of the costume. The main focus of this study was on renewing the understanding of the decorativeness and practicality of button and searching for a new direction for the modernized Korean costume fashion industry. As for the method of research, the literature review of modernized Korean costume and button and direct review of the buttons being sold in the market were conducted in parallel in order to conduct analysis based on the classification according to the shape, material and pattern. Instead of the traditional metal producing technique, we used computer CAD in the production and raised the level of quality of detailed design and prepared for the foundation for future mass production. And as for other detailed decorations, the decorativeness was increased through the casting through Rhino CAD work and potassium sulfate coloring technique and matte finish, glossy finish and plating. This study sought to contribute in the commercialization of tradition by designing and producing the function and shape of the tradition and decorativeness of the Korean traditional costume in order for them to become befitting to modernized Korean costume as much as possible.
