The rapid development of technology after the industrial revolution has changed the patterns of human behavior and a mode of life. Since the first computer, a simple extension of a calculator, was developed in 1940s, the computer has been improved dramatically over the next 60 years and became more and more important in our lives. Computer graphics, which was developed in 1970s, also more and more useful and practical tool in a variety of areas as personal computers are distributed. After the introduction of computer graphics into the design at the end of 1980s, design works which had been done only by hand became easier to do and we could see the output of the design work in advance through modeling and rendering. In a field of furniture design, some companies and students have been trying to apply computer graphics into their design work. This tendency, however, is not apparent enough. The most important factors in furniture design are the form and the quality of the production. With the consideration that most idea sketches are conducted by hand, it is difficult of designers to express their ideas as they initially intend. Computer graphics is expected to contribute to solving these kinds of difficulties by visualizing the work the artist thought of. For example, three-dimensional modeling enables the designers to view their work from different angles and rendering to see the quality of material as similar as it will be. In this context, this paper is aimed at demonstrating the necessity and the importance of the computer graphics in furniture design with examples in which the computer graphics is applied in the real work.
