The range of Andean textiles demonstrates the vanous techniques and levels of abstraction explored. Wari textiles form an extraordinary corpus of woven of art . At first the bold compositions seem to celebrate geometry itself; their designs read as grid- based, rectilinear, strikingly coloristic, dynamic, and above all, illegible pattern. Wari primarily utilized textiles, specifically, fine woven tapestry garments, to disseminate their message of religious-political control. The staff- bearer iconography concerns a winged, standing human, human-bird, or human- feline composite figure, hold one or two staffs and wearing an elaborate headdress. Wari tunics were collaboratively by groups of highly skilled arti sts, each of whom contributed an individual interpretation of set repeated motifs. Repeated motif alternation itself does not signal the rote reproduction of design elements that tends to be characteristic of craft. Instead, visual variety consciously adds art istic dynamism to an otherwise regular composition. Deviant color choices in Wari tunic seem to show where the arti sts put their own personal interpretations into the composition. There are numerous intentional irregularities, such as striping of different colors in a single shape. The overriding concern for completeness, physical and conceptual, is typical of Andean textile artistry. The attention to means of expression, that is, interest in colors and shapes themselves, shows the level of aesthetic sophistication encouraged in highly developed society.
