Knit has an old history as a technique of craft to make garments and various goods of life. Recently is also made by knitting machine on a large scale. In the field of fashion material industry, the consumption of knitted fabrics has started to SUIl)aSS that of woven fabrics. The consumer's taste become more refine and complicate. Terefore, it is necessary to improve its design and quality. Aran knit motive is the most applicable pattern to knit. It comes from Aran islands which are located in the westem sea of Ireland, and reflects the artistic form of the Celts. The Celtic art can be distinguished from the Greek and Homan art by its decorativeness. With the study of Aran knit, we can comprehend the people who made the motive; their life, values, religion, aesthetic consciousness. Aran motive which is figured on the sweater for fisherman symbolizes security of life, bountful harvest and so on. At the same time this motive represents religious sprits. Aran motive has the worth of folk art including the Celtic tradition. On the other hand, is being developed into the popular fashion item.
