철에 관한 연구

비철금속을 위주로 다루는 금속공예 분야에서는 철재에 대한 인식이 그리 풍부하지 못하다. 금속공예에 다뤄지는 재료는 주로 비철금속이지만, 그것들을 직접적으로 다루게 되는 도구들은 대부분 철로 만들어져 있다. 금속공예에 쓰이는 도구뿐 아니라 다른 모든 도구와 공구들이 철로 만들어져 있지만，다른 어떤 분야보다도 금속공예에서 쓰이는 도구들은 철과 밀접한 관계를 갖고 있다. 특히 열처리에 의해 강도를 조절할 수 있는 철의 특정은 같은 금속류를 다루는 금속공예 에서 없어서는 안 될 매우 유용한 쓰임이 된다. 이에 따라 철의 열처리 및 담금질을 중심으로 연구하여 철에 대한 재인식과 경험을 넓히고자한다. 연구 방법은 먼저 철의 유래와 역사 및 일반적인 고찰을 통하여 철에 대해 전반적인 이해 를 돕고，열처리를 하면 철의 조직이 어떻게 변화되고 담금질을 하면 왜 단단해지는지에 대한 이론적인 배경과 실질적 인 방법을 통하여 명확하게 파악한다. 또한 담금질의 실제 방법들을 모색함으로서 철을 다루는데 필요한 실질적인 문제들을 해결 하는데 도움이 되고자 한다.

Metal craft artists who use nonferrous metals mostly do not have a full understanding of ferrous metals. The target objects are nonferrous but the tools are ferrous. It is not just in metal craft other tools and instruments in other fields are also ferrous. However, the tools used in metal craft have a closer relationship with ferrous metals than in other fields of work. With heat treatment, the strength of ferrous metals can be varied - a very important factor in metal craft. Thus heat treatment and quenching of ferrous metals will be the focus of the research, thereby extending knowledge and experience on metals. The study first presents the general understanding of ferrous materials by looking at the history of ferrous metals, and then offers theories as to how heat treatment can change the structure of metals and why quenching increases the strength. Furthermore, the study also looks at the methcxls used in quenching and the solutions to the problems arising in dealing with metals.
