Nowadays many of industrial ceramics manufactured in Korea are high-quality product s. According to recent ceramics- related reports, consumers' will of purchase and the sales of ceramics are significantly affected not only by the materials of the ceramics but also by the technique of decoration on their surface. In part icular, while ' ordinary ceramics use the transfer printing technique with paints for surface decoration, some of high-quality ceramics decorate with gold or silver using the hand painting technique. Moreover, because gold or silver decoration for ceramics relies on manual painting , it has problems such as manpower management, the consistence of quality and the high cost of materials . The present study purposed to develop a new highly value-added ceramic surface decoration technique using vacuum metallizing rather than handiwork with gold or silver, to establish the basic theory of the technique, to improve the quality of ordinary ceramics as high as high-graded ceramics and, ultimately, to localize high-quality ceramics and to enhance the added value of industrial ceramics manufactured in Korea. Vacuum metallizing is a decoration technique that plates objects with metallic film using a chemical method. The surface treatment method forms a thin film by evaporating a metal or chemical compound in high vacuum and depositing the vapor on the surface of objects. The technique utilizes the difference of saturated vapor pressure between the high- temperature source of evaporation and the low- temperature surface of objects treated. Vacuum metallizing forms a film by evaporating or sublimating the material to apply in vacuum and solidifying it on the surface of substrate at a unit of atom or molecule. It is usually cani ed out in vacuum in order to improve the efficiency of growth and the purity of film. That is, when a material for vapor deposition is heated and evaporated in vacuum, the material evaporates in the atomic or molecular state and deposits. The method is widely used in manufacturing thin films. For vacuum metallizing in this study was introduced a ceramic decoration technique using tungsten filament evaporation source of resistance heating. As for research methods for developing a ceramic decoration technique based on vacuum metallizing, this study examined the methods. effects and roles of vacuum metallizing through basic investigation and literature review and, as substantial results of this study, manufactured samples using ceramic products through experimental analysis of the thickness of vacuum metallizing based on basic theories in order to decorate ceramic surface with gold and silver and examined the possibility of the development of new decoration techniques and their indust rial applicability.
