When testing a child with articulatory- phonological disorders, it might be ideal to test both the correctness of consonant s and the intelligibility of his/ her spontaneous, connected speech. However , there are occasions which make it impossible to test the connected speech due to either or both of the following factor s : the lengthy time required to administer a test and the unintelligibility of a subject s speech. One way which could overcome this difficulty might be to predict the level of intelligibility based on the percentage of consonant s correct of the child in concern. The purpose of the present research is to investigate this possibility. Fifty subject s participated in the ex periment : an experiment al group of 25 childr en with function al articulat ory - phonological disorders and a control group of 25 normal children. Three tests were administered to the subjects : (1) the word test , which was to get the percentage correct of the 19 Korean consonants in 23 words, (2) the sentence test, in which the same set of 23 words were embedded in sentences, the purpose of which was to get the percentage correct of the 19 Korean consonant s in the sentential environments, and (3) the test of connected speech, which provided the data on the percentage correct of the consonants and the scores on intelligibility of the words. In the case of the connected speech, 70 utterances per child were collected on the separate criteria to calculate the percentage of consonant s correct and the intelligibility scores. The results were shown as follows: (1) As for the percentage of consonant s correct , MANOVA with repeated measures was carried out and it was found that there was a group difference between the children with articulatory- phonological disorder s and the normal children. However, no statistically significant difference was found between different methods of testing, i.e., between the word test , the sentence test , and the test of connected speech, in both groups of children with arcticulatory- phonological disorders and normal children, respectively ; (2) Pearson s Simple Product -Moment Correlation Coefficients were obtained for each group of subjects, and it was found that there was a statistically significant correlation between the percentages of consonants correct and the scores of intelligibility in either group, in respect to the three tests. Therefore, we might conclude, with some caution, that we could feasibly predict the level of intelligibility on the basis of the score of consonant s correct, either that of the word test or that of the sentence test.
