Expression of Patterns by Wood Block Inserted Tie Dyeing

Tie-dyeing is a method of dyeing fabric in which the sec tions of the fabric are tightly bound with thread to resi st the dye solution. thereby producing a variega ted pattern. There arc various techniqu es of tie dyeing. This study attempts to present a possib le method by sys tematically finding and experimcnting on patterns that can be expressed by block inserted dye that is one of the kinds of tie-d yeing. Cotte n is used as a materi al and dyed with direct dye, and the wood blocks are prepar ed in the geometrical forms such as triangle. square, rectangle, pentagon. c ircle, sec tor and fine block and in thc other forms such as flower and star. The experiment revea ls that the formati veness of block inseted tie dyeing is obtained by systematic method, not contingent effec t, by giving patterns that may vary dependin g 0 11 the form of block, method of foldin g fabri c, and the surface of fabric coming into cotact with the block . Thus, an appr opriate method can be selected according to desired use.
