The usual methods of coloring metal ornaments include surface anodizing. plating and paintin g. Howe ver , the anodiz ing meth od ca n apply to AL mat eri al s only and the pla ting method has been causing a seve re environmental problem because of the toxicit y of mater ials used. For these methods, sur face deteriorations such as deco loratio n. sc ratch and cor ros ion also occ ur after long-tim e usc. Therefore, a better surface treatment method is needed. Thi s study was co nducted to improve corros ion resistance and wear resi stan ce o r met al ornaments. and increase their added value by means of the Dl.CrDi amond-Like-Carbon) coa ting meth od. and to expand the range of its app lication. Thi s study examined the charac teris tics o r the OLC for coloring met al ornaments and the orna mental design for practi cal applica tion. Coating metal ornaments could be considered as one or promis ing fields for applica tion or OLe. OLC film is very suitable as a coa ting materi al because it is an amorphous carbon mater ial based on covalent bond and therefore has excellent hardness, wear resistance, lubr icat ive property, chemical stability and light transmittance. DLC coating film was formed by the PECVD method using 13.56MHz rf plasma and CH4 gas as a material gas .At this time RF power, working pressure, transmitt ance acco rding to kind and amount of auxiliary gas, and changes in optical band gap were observed. It was shown that the higher the RF power and working pressure, the lower the optical bang gap. Thi s could be demonstrated by observing the amount of carbon-hydroge n bond by means of FT-IR. It was shown that addi tion of hydrogen and nitrogen would the optical band gap becau se they serves to break the carbon-hydrogen bond at the time of vapor deposition. Th e directi on o f desi gn was se t up in the mann er that the DLC coating film co uld be effec tive ly deposited on the surface of an ornament. Design was based on geometric figures and minimalism with plane elements accentuated. Accentuated, partial coa ting or simple, whole coa ting was induced by combining quadrangles, triangles and circles basically.
