The humankind has been decorating its body, driven by other desires beside the one for self- beautification, which includ e; the desire to serve magical religious purpose, desire to distinguish from other trib es. desire to mark rank, courage and promise and other desires. The history of these ornaments might be longer than the hist ory of clothes. As the industry grew increa sin gly, development of mat erials for the ornaments also diver sified and th eir processing techn ology also progressed acco rding to the increase in demand. and th ere is an attempt to fulfill the customer demand through mass produ ction. However, on the other side of the indu strial society lies diver se existing state of human alienation along with the formation, influx and expansion of extremely unique and new culture. Recently, piercing which can be referred as one type of body decoration that emphas izes uniqu e charac te ristics is expand ing rap idly among the youths along wit h techno culture fervor. Piercing is the act of making holes in body part s to decorate with too ls of various shapes. Often, facial features such as eyes. nose. mouth. ears and others as well as most of other body parts such as belly button. tong ue. nipples, genita ls and others are subject to piercing. Piercing consists of a case whereby the painful ac t of piercing is considered a medium for pleasure and of other cases where one seeks own satisfaction and so forth. Since piercing could cause bodily injury which might not be rever sed through medica l mean s, rational judgment of piercing practiti oner s is needed. This resea rch will analyze and organize the materials and forms of diverse decorative tools used for piercing to enable appropriate accommodation and understanding of this culture.
