We are all aware that the culture of traditional Korean porcelain, though influenced by the Chinese, has developed into various distincti ve artisan cultures in Korea throughout our long history. creating an outstanding tradition of porcelain in Korea. In part icula r, the southe rn par t of Korea has been recogn ized as an area wi th a highly advanced porcelain culture this part of Korea is not only a significant historical area in terms of its distributi on of produ cti on sites, but it is also the indisputable origin of the porcelain tradition in terms of its pure and authentic Korean identity. Buncheong Porcelain, known for its embodiment of a unique poetic sentiment, that ca n be found almost exc lusive ly in wo rks c reated during the Chos un Dynasty, has been widely produced in the Mt. Mudeung area including Mooan-gun, Choonghyo-dong Gwangju city, and Woondae-ri Goheung-gun. The Buncheong porcelain produced in this area, with a uniquene ss of style that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, has been developed into an everyday mainstream ware style for the ordinary folks as the most representative form of Korean porcelain that reveal s our ancestors mind-set, which was simple, pure and humble. In particular, the decorative designs employed in Buncheong porcelain from Mt. Mudeungsan have been the womb that gave birth to the crafty designs of the retrogressed Sanggam Celadon, the Inlaid Porcelains , and have remained as newly completed forms of wares during the 15 and 16th century. Mostly made using the techniques of Sanggam(inlaying), Inhwa(stamping ), and Johwa(line-engraving) in applying black and white clays to produce delic ate patterns, they are especially of significant value in the history of Korean porcelain with its own unique artistic technique, including the original inlaying technique that has been found to be widely used in variou s inscriptions and base, and th ese are quit e distincti ve from Buncheong porcelains produced in other areas. This paper intends to explore the unique aspects of Buncheong Porcel ain from the Mt. Mudeung area in Choonghyo-dong, Gwangju-si, and ways to promote its artistic tradition . In order to achieve this objec tive, by using various historical remains such as pieces of porcelain and insights made available through various research projects, the unique aspects of Buncheong Porcelain from the Mt. Mudeun g area will be examined with emphasis on the hist orical significance within the context of the Buncheong Porcelain from this area. In additi on, based on the recognition of its significance and its position in the history of Korean porcelain and within the context of inheritance of the local culture and its development, this paper intends to suggest ways to promote the artistic tradition of the Buncheong Porcelain from the Mt. Mudeung area, and how to contribute to the specialization of our local traditional culture.
