A Study on the Issues of Casting in Ancient Times in Korea

The Korean culture of metal cas ting traces its history and tradition back to ancient times. There exist two perspectives in examining the relics of the Bronze Age. The relics can either be examined from the perspective of the manufacturer or be seen as objects of cultural assets from the perspective of the researcher. There is a great risk of misleading in carrying out the research only on the characteristics of externa l appearance s in the relics of casting such as the shape and design without much knowledge of skills in casting. A good supply of the ore is an essential prerequisite for manu facturing metal wares, however there are limitations in obtaining the ore. Quality wares cannot be produced without mastering the skills of refini ng raw materials and manufact uring. Specifically, many problems in metal arts cannot be solved without understanding the skills and techniques of manufacturin g. This results in the slow progress in the research on the arts of casting. This paper introduces and examines the issue s of the traditional skills and techniques in casting, focu sing on the problems of them suggested above.
