Focusing on Hong Yong-pyo' s technique of making paper flowers used in Eunsanbyeolsinje(village ritual of Eunsan)

This study was conducted to examine the paper flower-making craftsman Mr. Hong Yongpyo(7l)' s techniqu e of making paper flowers which are used as one of ritual offe rings in Eunsanbyeolsinje that is performed in Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do and was designated as the Important Intangible Cultural Property No.9. Paper flowers made by him are characterized by elegant blossom. In Eunsa nbyeolsi nje, eig ht kind s of paper flow er s-Ious flower, tr ee peony flower, chrysanthemum flower, herbaceous peony flower, magnolia flower, sweetbrier flower, and two wisteria flowers-are used in their or iginal shapes which have been hand ed down from old times. Pap er flower se rves as an imp ort ant ritu al element adding a gorgeo us , solemn atmosphere to exorcism performances as well as a sacrifice offered to a god. In addition, paper flower contains a hopeful meaning that it brings blessing to people.
