A Study of Plastic Expression on Metal-smith using “Marriage of Mεtal" Technique

One of weak points in metal is its monotone in color so that it is hard to express various colors. Marriage of Meta l technique is a decorative expression technique of different color patterns on a basis metal sheet by combining several metals. This study aims to research manufactur ing techniques for express ion, search the possibility of various forms, and suggest plan for express ing bet ter metal crafts. To make this, we have investigated Marria ge of Metal techniques by vario us Metal Crafts artists of Korea, Japan, U.S.A. and Germany on their works for recent 20 years. In addition, I present the Marriag e of Metal technique of my own experienced through my work and performed supplementary s tudy with books. I concentrated on molding analysi s for expression of color and pattern. This study was performed being divided into unit manufacturing with metal wire rod and board, pattern solder manufacturing , and manufacturing with simple and complex expression of patterns by the manufacturing method. This study also divides the molding by external shape, pattern and mixed use with other metal processing technique. In manufacturing method, CD wire rod or board with pattern of different metals can be made by soldering. This becomes a piece of new metal mater ial with pattern giving possibility of natural visual effect. @ It is strong because any shape of pattern can be soldered regardless of pattern size. @ It features the same pattern up and down of the metal sheet so that the molding object can be expressed more freely with various effect. In molding expression, CD it can be used as a strong visual language from simple pattern expression such as sprite to complex pattern expression requirin g high technique. @ Infinite plane express ion is possible with the comparison effect of color. @ Accessories are small in size and usually have simple patterns in order to harmonize with design factors. On the other hand, it is visually effective to express detail and complex patterns for big sized conta iners. @ It is possible to express more various colors in patterns by the mixed use with other metal processing techniques. @ Since 'Marriage of Metal' technique requires high degree of sawing and soldering, it is recommended not to try this technique in the initial stage of one' s metal crafts in order to avoid fear from metal. ？？ It shall be emphasized that, for various express ion of 'Marriage of Metal' techniqu e, intellectual and work experience s are needed for soldering of minute parts and propertie s of metal material s as well as the development of metal materials.
