According to Ruskin, aesthetic value is related to other values of human life. His attention to the relationship of art and other provinces of life has contemporary significance. His attention is a challenge to modern differentiation between spheres of human life. Differentiation is a characteristic of modern culture. This study attempts to examine the original concepts of art and design(chp., 1), to consider the relationship of beauty and usefulness(chap ., 2), to suggest Ruskin's concept of design(chap., 3), to consider the nature of nature as the source of the principles for design and as the ideal unity of beauty and usefulness(chap., 4), to identify the ideal relation between design and making which Ruskin suggests(chap., 5), and finally, by examining Ruskin's belief that art has organic relation to society, which forms, in turn, an environment for design, to find a clue to solve the problems facing contemporary design, such as the differentiation design from making, the dehumanization of making by the division of work and thd induction of machinery, and the workingmen' s condition of life and working. Through this study, we can find that the contemporary significance of Ruskin's aesthetic thought depends upon his opposition to the differentiation of modern culture. From Ruskin's aesthetic thoughts, we can infer the idea of design as a unified and synthesized process which seeks to realize human spiritual ideas.
