동계(桐溪) 정온(鄭蘊) 서원배향(書院配享)의 제주교육사적 의미

The Significance of Honoring Donggye Jungon in History of Jeju Education

제주도에서 동계 정온이 주력했던 자기교육활동에 대한 가장 구체적인 성과는 후일 귤림서원 배향으로 나타난다. 정온은 척화파로서의 삶을 살았고 이를 계기로 제주도 귤림서원에 배향이 되면서 경의지학이라는 남명학파의 유서라는 차원에서 자신의 교육사상을 제주도에도 계승시키는 결정적인 역할을 하게 된다. 서원 배향은 곧 “서원에 가면 엄연히 그 사람을 보는 듯(入其堂儼然若見其人)”하여 후세대들로 하여금 그들처럼 되도록 감발흥기(感發興起)케 하는 교육적 동기를 갖고 있는 중요한 행사이다. 따라서 제주도 귤림서원 배향을 통해 정온은 200여 년간 제주도 교육의 큰 스승(經史大師)으로서 역할을 할 수 있었으며 이를 계기로 무엇보다 제주도에서도 남명학파의 유서라는 차원에서 “경”과 “의”에 투철하고, 학문적 실천에 엄격했던 교육사상을 계승시키는 역할을 할 수 있었다.

Donggye(桐溪) Jungon(鄭蘊) is a government official in the late Chosun Dynasty who contributed to the development of confucian education in Jeju. While exiled to Jeju, he engaged in various teaching activities including the making of various confucian reading and study groups. In fact, it is his enshrinement to Gyulim Suhwon(橘林書院) that played the most important role in Jeju’s confucian education. During the Manchu war of 1636, Jungon opposed to the reconciliation with Manchurians. He at last attempted to kill himself as Chosun made a peace agreement with Manchurians. Jungon was enshrined in Gyulim Suhwon, one of the major confucian memorial and lecture hall in Jeju, for this patriotic sentiment. Honoring a distinguished person at Suhwon is an important educational event in Confucianism. It is because the event inspires students to learn after the deeds of a great person. By enshrined in Gyulim Suhwon, Jungon had presented a model for confucian education in Jeju for more than 200 years. As a result, Jeju people could inherit the history of Namyung Confucian School((南冥學派).
