The Effect of “It Takes Two to Talk” Program on Communicative Abilities of the Children with Developmental Language Delay and Their Parents’ Behaviors

배경 및 목적: 영유아 언어발달에 있어서 부모의 역할은 매우 크다. 장애영유아의 부모들은 아동들과 상호작용을 하는데 큰 어려움을 보인다. 부모교육프로그램(It Takes Two to Talk)은 부모에게 다양한 상호작용 전략을 익혀 아동의 의사소통능력을 향상시키고자 하는 것이다. 이 연구의 목적은 언어발달지체아동의 부모교육프로그램이 아동의 의사소통기능을 향상시키고 부모의 행동을 변화시키는지를 살펴보는 데에 있다. 방법: 언어발달지체로 진단된 영유아의 어머니 4명을 대상으로 총 7회기의 집단회기와 3회기의 개별회기가 실시되었다. 프로그램 전과 후에 아동-어머니 간의 상호작용을 녹화한 후 아동의 의사소통기능, 부모의 말, 아동에 대한 반응 및 전략 사용을 비교 분석하였다. 결과: 프로그램 후 아동 4명 중 3명은 의사소통기능의 빈도수 및 유형이 증가하였다. 프로그램 후 부모들은 상호작용적 전략을 더 많이 사용한 것으로 나타났으며, 아동에 대한 최적반응이 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 부모의 말을 분석한 결과, 그 복잡성과 양에 있어서 현저하게 감소하였다. 논의 및 결론: 부모교육프로그램은 대체로 아동의 의사소통기능을 향상시키고 부모의 행동을 긍정적인 측면으로 변화시키는데 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 부모프로그램 효과를 지속적으로 유지하고, 효율적인 프로그램의 운영을 위한 제안들을 논의하였다.

Background & Objectives: In the development of a child’s language skills, the role of the parent is very important. A number of studies have shown that parental responsivity facilitated a child’s communication. This study examines the effect of the parent training program (“It Takes Two Talk”, ITTT) on children with developmental language delay (DLD) and their parents’ behavior. Methods: Four children with developmental language delay and their parents participated in the program. A total of 12 sessions, including group and individual sessions, were carried out. Child/ parent interaction during play was videotaped before and after the program. The frequency and the type of communicative function were analyzed. The parents’ use of interactive strategies was rated and optimal response and utterances were analyzed. Results: After the program, three of the four children with DLD showed improvement in the frequency and the type of communicative function. The parents were rated better in their use of interactive strategies after the program. Also, they increased the optimal responses and decreased the talkativeness and complexities in utterances. Discussion & Conclusion: This study showed that the parent training program was effective in facilitating children’s communicative functions. Also, the program was effective for the parents to learn and apply interactive strategies and optimal responses, and to decrease their talkativeness and complexities of their utterances.
