This study was carried out to investigate the effects of tea on the heart rate variability (HRV) of elderly women in a nursing home. For the study, 18 volunteers aged 60 to 80 in a nursing home in Seosan city participated Before the experiment, all subjects were pre-tested using SA-3000P (Medicore Co. Ltd. Korea), and their HRV data were recorded. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups, the experimental group (eight subjects) and control group (ten subjects). The experimental group practiced tea manners and drank tea every day after lunch for 31 days. The control group had no any specific treatment. After 31 days, all subjects of the two groups were post-tested. HRV data were analyzed by univariate analysis of variance. There were significant differences in the mean value of HRV indices. In the time domain analysis, SDNN and RMSSD indices significantly increased in the experimental group., as did the LF normal index In in the frequency domain analysis. However, the HF normal index significantly decreased in the experimental group. This study indicates that tea improved the cardiac conditions of elderly women. Moreover, the results encourage the development of atea life program for the elderly living in nursing homes.
