상트 뻬쩨르부르그 한국학 연구와 원자료

Research on historical materials in the area of Korean studies in Saint Petersburg

이 논문은 상트 뻬쩨르부르그 지역 내의 각 기록 보존소들에 소장되어 있는 한국학 관련 문서, 사진 자료들의 특징 및 현황, 그리고 향후 활용 방안 및 문제점들을 다루고 있다. 학문으로서의 한국학은 러시아의 사회적, 문화적, 정치적 이해 관계들을 반영하면서 발전하였다. 서구나 중국 등에 비교할 때 러시아는 한국학 분야의 후발주자였다. 그러나 비교적 뒤늦은 출발에도 불구하고 러시아의 한국학은 해외 한국학 분야에서 상당한 결실을 맺었으며 현재까지 그 뿌리깊은 전통을 이어가고 있다. 러시아의 각 도시들 중 상트 뻬쩨르부르그는 20세기 이전 러시아에서 출판된 한국 관련 자료들을 상당수 보관하고 있다. 주요 자료 소장 기관은 국립 역사 기록 보존소, 국립 도서관, 러시아 지리학회, 인류학 박물관, 과학아카데미 산하 동방학 연구소 등이었다. 이 기관들에 보관된 문헌 자료들 중 이번 연구에서 특히 주목한 것은 한국의 자연 지리 문화의 탐사 기록 등이다. 이 사료들은 러시아인들의 직접적인 경험과 관찰을 통해 한국인의 삶과 문화를 기록한 것이기 때문에 특히 그 가치가 있다. 연구 논문에서는 문헌 자료 외에도 19세기 말에서 20세기 중반까지 한국의 현실을 고증하는 사진 자료들의 현황 파악에도 주목하고 있다. 특히 1898년 한국을 탐사한 러시아 지리학회 대원들은 당시 한국의 실상을 생생하게 보여주는 사진 백 여 점을 남기고 있는데 이번 연구는 그 사진들을 한국 연구자들 가운데서 최초로 발굴, 디지털화 하였다. 자료들의 현황 파악과 더불어 그에 관련된 문제들을 논문은 지적하고 있다. 자료의 접근성이 아직까지 큰 폭으로 확대되지 않은 점, 자료들의 정리가 잘 안되어 있어 그 소재의 파악조차 안되어 있다는 점 등은 가장 큰 문제점이라 할 것이다. 또한 파악된 자료들을 확보하고 적절한 고증, 비교, 분석 등으로 심도 있게 연구해야 할 필요성 등이 지적되고 있다.

This article is dedicated to research of historical materials in the area of Korean studies in Saint Petersburg’s main archives, research institutes and museums. Saint Petersburg has been a center of culture and science in Russia. Korean studies actually began in that place, and majority of historical materials printed before 1917 revolution are presented in former capital of imperial Russia. Those materials, not accessible to Korean researchers for a long period, are important in the sense that they can give a new perspective on history. Main organs mentioned in this research are Russian National Archive, Russian National Public Library, Archive of Russian Geographic Society, Institute of Eastern Studies, Institute of Anthropology and Ethnology belonging to Academy of Science, and Faculty of Eastern Studies in St. Petersburg National University. This article contains information about general circumstances of those materials, and pays special attention to materials regarding expedition of Russians to Korea and their observations on Korean life and culture. Documents on this theme are valuable as they show fresh and unknown aspects of Korean culture a century ago. Researcher’s attention addressed not only documentary but also visual materials. More than one hundred of pictures taken by Russian Geographic society members in 1898 were found and for the first time digitalized by Korean researchers. Article also touches on problems in researching those materials and possibilities of how to use them in the future.
