1890년대-1910년대 독립 여선교사 진 페리와 엘렌 패쉬의 교육활동

Educational Activities of Independent Female Missionaries Jean Perry and Ellen Pash, 1890s-1910s

본 연구는 개화기를 거쳐 일제하 1916년까지 조선에서 활동했던 진 페리 (Jean Perry)와 엘렌 패쉬(Ellen Pash)의 교육활동을 알아보고, 교육적 의의를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이들의 활동은 사료의 부족으로 부정확한 정보가 재생산되거나 그간의 연구에서 거의 다루어지지 못하였다. 본 연구는 새로 발굴한 사료들과 진 페리의 저작 6편을 바탕으로 이들의 교육활동을 재구성하였다. 페리와 패쉬는 모두 영국 태생의 여성으로, 1896년 함께 활동을 시작하기 이전부터 각자 종교교육, 장애아교육, 여성교육, 고아원에 대한 풍부한 경험을 가지고 있었다. 이들은 독립적으로 영국복음전도회(British Evangelistic Society)를 세워 남한 최초의 맹아학교를 운영한다. 이 학교는 기숙형 학교로 버려진 아이들을 위한 고아원와 맹아들을 위한 특수교육, 맹아의 자립을 위한 실업교육, 여성 성경반을 통한 성인 문해교육 및 종교교육을 담당했다. 이 학교는 케임브리지대학교 출신인 엘렌 패쉬가 맺고 있던 영국의 인적 네트워크와 진 페리의 저작 활동, 그리고 학생들의 실업활동을 통해 학교의 재정을 충당하였다. 이들 두 영국계 독립여선교사의 활동은 한국 근대교육, 특히 특수교육의 초기 도입 단계에서 중요한 발자취를 남겼다.

This article investigated educational activities of two independent female missionaries, Jean Perry and Ellen Pash, during the period between the 1890s to 1916 and discussed their importance in Korea's early history of modern education. Due to the paucity of existing documents, inadequate attention has been paid to their activities and sometimes incorrect information of them has been circulated. This article attempted at reconstituting the activities on the basis of hitherto unexplored records including Perry's six writings. The two British missionaries had considerable experiences in religious education, women's education, education of the handicapped and orphans before they started to work together in 1896. Independently of the existing religious orders, they established the British Evangelistic Society and ran the first school for the blind in South Korea. This boarding school took care of the abandoned orphans, provided special education for the blind and technical teaching to help their independence, and ran the Bible group for women for religious and literacy education. The school utilized the network that Cambridge graduate Pash had and the writings of Perry, and had financial benefit from the works of the students. The educational activities of these independent British female missionaries appears to have left considerable traces in the early stage of Korea's introduction of modern education, and most notably in special education.
