교육의 마태복음 효과에 대한 논의

Matthew Effect in Education

본 연구에서는 교육기회의 불평등 현상을 탐구하기 위해 기회의 누적이득효과를 의미하는 마태복음효과(matthew effect)라는 개념을 차용하여 영재교육을 대상으로 분석하였다. 연구결과 선발 및 평가제도가 일부 계층에게 누적이득을 제공하고 있으며, 그러한 교육기회 측면의 누적이득은 개인의 역량 개발에 지속적으로 영향을 미치고 있었다. 또한, 학업성취도가 높고 학교교육을 통해 양질의 교육을 제공받을수록 그렇지 않은 경우보다 추가적인 교육수요에 대한 욕구가 높게 나타나 마태복음 효과의 기회와 역량이라는 두 가지 차원이 동시에 작용하고 있음을 확인하였다. 마태복음 효과에 대한 연구가 주는 시사점은 교육기회 차원의 누적이득의 연결고리들을 추적해서 그러한 효과의 시발점을 발견하고, 형평성에 입각한 교육활동이나 제도 등 운영에 대한 분석과 개선에 있다고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the evidences of benefits which continuously effect on the accumulation of other beneficial opportunities in education. This study borrowed the concept, “Matthew Effect” to explain accumulating benefits of opportunities in education. The major conclusions obtained through this research are as follows: 1. It is necessary to discern the starting point of Matthew Effect by examining the accumulative process and to analyze whether educational activities or systems operate equally to all in the same way. 2. To solve the problem of inequality due to social economy status, the government should enlarge the educational support policy to the stage of pre-school.
