The Art Education Philosophy Of June King McFee

본 연구는 미국의 미술교육학자 맥피의 미술교육철학을 다문화, 시각문화와 공동체 기반 환경 디자인 미술 교육의 관점을 중심으로 고찰하고 오늘날 미술교육을 위한 시사점을 제시하고자 하였다. 미술이라는 개념에 대한 도구적 정의-미술은 문화적 커뮤니케이션 시스템이다-는 맥피의 미술교육철학의 근간이며, 미술의 형식은 그 사회의 문화, 즉 사회적 관습, 신념, 태도, 그 시대의 생각을 반영한다고 보았다. 따라서 미술의 형식에 내포되어 있는 가치체계와 신념을 이해함으로서 그 사회와 문화를 이해하게 된다. 맥피의 미술의 개념은 19 세기 서구 사회에 만연했던 엘리트주의에 의한 미술의 개념에서 탈피하여 대중문화, 민예, 그리고 대중 매체까지 수용하는 미술의 개념으로 확장시켰다. 맥피의 미술교육철학을 다문화사회에서의 공동체 기반 환경 미술 교육, 미술교육에서의 지각 발달을 위한 교육의 중요성, 그리고 시각문화미술교육에 대한 맥피의 다문화적 접근의 영향을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 맥피의 다문화미술교육 사상은 다양한 문화가 생성되고 유입되고 있는 한국 사회 상황과 학생들의 정체성 함양을 위하여 공동체 기반 미술 교육의 중요성을 미술교육자들이 인식하고, 미술교육과정의 주요한 주제로서 다루어야 할 것을 제안한다.

This study aims to investigate the art education philosophy of June King McFee and explore the implications for contemporary art education. The instrumental definition of art-art is a cultural communication system- is an underpinning concept of McFee's art education philosophy. McFee noted that the art form reflects on customs, beliefs, thoughts, and attitudes of the society. One can understand the society and culture through learning the value systems and beliefs symbolized by art forms. The concept of art of McFee extended the boundary of art from limited in Western fine arts to inclusive of popular arts, folk arts, and mass media. The art education philosophy of McFee was examined, centering on multicultural, community-based environment education, the importance of perceptual readiness for art, and the influence of multicultural views of McFee on visual culture art education. Exploring McFee's art education philosophy provides an implication that art educators should be aware of the influx and emergence of diverse cultures in today's Korean society, and develop an art education curriculum in which diverse values and aesthetics are integrated.
