A survey was carried out to investigate the effect of calcium supplementation with nutrition education on dietary behavior and serum calcium concentration in middle-aged women. The subjects were 20 career women aged from 30 to 49 living in Cheongju city. Nutrition education was implemented once a month, and calcium for supplementation was provided as calcium-coated-rice enough to eat twice a day during 9 months from April 4th to December 31, 2005. After the education, the consumption of alcohol (p<0.01), coffee (p<0.05), and coke (p<0.01) were significantly decreased, and the duration and the frequency of exercise were significantly increased (p<0.001). The percentages of women who answered nutrition knowledge questions correctly were significantly increased, and mean nutrition knowledge score was improved from 3.35 to 4.60 (p<0.05). Mean score of 6 items on dietary behavior was significantly improved, and frequencies of eating out were significantly decreased (p<0.001). Frequencies of intake of noodles and instant foods were significantly decreased (p<0.001), and frequencies of intake of milk, yogurt, cheese were significantly increased (p<0.001). Mean concentration of serum calcium was significantly increased from 9.13 mg/dl to 9.72 mg/dl after calcium supplementation. In conclusion, nutrition education and calcium supplementation during 9 months were effective for improving nutrition knowledge, dietary behaviors, and calcium concentration in middle-aged women.
