종교에 대한 흄과 칸트의 견해

Hume and Kant on Religion: taking the different medium

칸트에 따르면, 흄은 『자연종교에 관한 대화』에서 기존의 대중종교의 토대가 되어온 신인동형적 유신론을 비판하는 한편 종교와 도덕의 토대가 될 수 없는 이신론만을 허용함으로써 결국 종교 일반에 대한 회의론에 봉착하게 되었다. 그러나 흄이 종교 일반에 대한 회의론에 빠졌다는 칸트의 주장과는 달리 흄은 종교에 대한 극단적 회의론자가 아니었다. 오히려 상징적 신인동형론을 통해 신인동형적 유신론에 기초한 기성종교와 이에 맞서는 종교에 대한 극단적 회의론 사이에서 정화된 유신론이라 할 수 있는 도덕종교를 이상적인 중용으로 제시한 칸트처럼 그 역시 독단론과 회의론의 양극단에서 중용을 모색하였다. 그러나 그가 제시한 것은 칸트와 달리 현실적 중용이었다. 다시 말해, 흄은 신인동형설에 기초해 온갖 유해성을 드러내는 대중종교와 이에 맞서 신의 존재에 대한 믿음과 도덕적 실천만을 유일한 종교적 실천으로 수용함으로써 추상성(비대중성)을 띤 18세기 자연종교의 양극단 사이에서 이 양자를 지양하는 영국국교회를 중용으로 수용하였다. 이들의 이 같은 상이한 중용 찾기는 인간을 바라보는 양자의 차이점에서 기인된다.

According to Kant, Hume was, in Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, faced with the total skepticism on religion in general by criticizing an anthropomorphism and endorsing deism on which morality and religion cannot be founded. But it is not true that Hume was a total skeptic with regard to religion. Hume sought for the medium between popular religion (dogmatism) and extreme skepticism as Kant did in order to open the room for true religion. But they sought for the different medium according to their different views of human nature. The result is that while Hume endorsed the Church of England as the happy medium between popular religion based on anthropomorphic theism on the one hand and natural religion based on deism on the other, Kant suggested moral religion as the true medium between popular religion and total scepticism.
