섬김의 리더십에 대한 인식

Perceptions on Servant Leadership

이 연구는 섬김의 리더십은 섬기는 종(servant)이면서 동시에 이끌어 가는 지도자(leader)의 상반된 역할 모형을 담고 있기 때문에, 섬김의 리더십에 대한 정확한 이해의 중요성을 전제로 한다. 대학생 833명의 설문조사 결과를 바탕으로 섬 김의 리더십에 대한 인식을 조사하였는데, 이들의 인식은 섬김과 이끔 간에 균형적으로 배분되어 있었다. 섬김의 성향이 35.8%, 중립 성향 26.2%, 이끔의 성향이 38%로 조사되었다. 상관성 분석 결과, 섬김의 리더십을 ‘낮은 자리에서 이웃을 섬기는 것’으로 인식하고 있는 응답자는 포용력을 리더의 덕목으로 생각하고, 자신의 리더십 비전을 공동체 화합에 두고 있었다. 반면에 섬김의 리더십을 ‘책임감을 갖고 목표를 달성하는 것’으로 인식하고 있는 응답자는 비기독교인이 많고, 리더의 덕목으로 책임감을 강조하는 반면 봉사정신과는 거리가 있었다. 이들의 리더십 형성에 부모의 영향이 큰 반면 종교단체와는 무관하였다.

This study presumes that the servant leader is expected to play two paradoxical roles, a servant and a leader, at the same time. Therefore, it is very important to have clear understanding of what the servant leadership is. This study examines the university students’ perceptions on servant leadership on the basis of the survey data collected from 833 students. The results show that their perceptions on servant leadership are balanced in between its tendency to serve and its tendency to lead. 35.8% of the respondents regard the servant leadership as serving others, 38% as leading others, and 26.2% at the middle. As the result of the relationship analysis, the respondents who perceive the servant leadership as ‘to serve others at the lower position’ tend to see the ability to accept others as the leader’s desirable capability, and place his individual leadership vision on the community collaboration. On the other hand, the respondents who perceive the servant leader as ‘to attain goals with sense of responsibility’ tend to be christians, to emphasize more the sense of responsibility than the sense of service, and to be influenced from their parents, not from the religious group. It is recommended that the universities have to make continuous research on what the servant leader is and how they can be educated. More practical experiences to build up servant leadership must be provided for university students.
