This paper investigated the tradition aspects and narrative meaning in the type of folk ballads "A maiden who is suspected of unfaithfulness from her brother". This type could be classified into four subtypes, i.e. the protest type, the death type, the burial type and the rebirth type. The protest type is composed of the 2 narrative paragraphs, i.e. when a maiden are suspected of unfaithfulness from her brother, she denies it and protests to her brother. It represents the antagonistic relationships between a maiden and her elder brother. In the death type, a maiden wishes to kill herself, because there is no way to verify her chastity. In Joseon dynasty, chastity was the most important norm to women. It symbolizes the society including her brother forced her to suicide. In the burial type a maiden expresses her dying will, she wants to be buried under the lotus field. It shows that she wishes to be connected with her relatives and she desires for the life. In the rebirth type, she incarnates into a lotus. It means she is faithful, moreover she wishes that she would revive. As the result of investigation, 100 versions were found. The protest type account for 39 versions, the death type 13 versions, the burial type 28 versions and the rebirth type 20 versions. The protest type was created and transmitted mainly around the Honam districts and the south-west of Yeongnam districts, the burial type and the rebirth type around the north-east of Yeongnam districts. It shows these types were formed in the close relation with the circumstances of districts. I couldn't find how the tradition aspects and narrative meaning of folk ballads "A maiden who is suspected of unfaithfulness from her brother" are related with the social and geographical circumstances of districts. This subject would be investigated in the continuing study through the enlargement of items and types of folk ballads.
