이 논문은 자폐장애의 주요 증상들과 자폐장애인들이 보이는 인지능력들을 인간능력에 관한 한 통합모델에서 제시하고 있는 인지메가니즘 안에서 설명하고 있다. 인지메카니즘은 자폐장애특성들이 많은 시선을 내부인지공간 속으로 향하도록 만드는 두뇌인지공간이 과도하게 성장한 결과로 나타난다고 제시하고 있다. 과도하게 성장한 두뇌인지공간은 한편으로 두뇌인지공간적에서의 사고를 용이하게 해주지만, 다른 한편으로는 상대적으로 외부공간에 대한 시선결핍장애를 야기시켜 외부상황에 대한 지식형성에 어려움을 겪게 하고 의사소통과 상호작용에 문제를 야기시킨다. 이 논문은 또한 진화론적 관점에서 왜 그리고 어떻게 두뇌 인지공간이 성장하며 자폐장애인들을 지원할 현실적 접근 방법을 제시하고 있다.
This paper explains major symptoms of autism and specific cognitive abilities of individuals with autism in a cognitive mechanism suggested in an integrated model of human abilities. The mechanism suggests that those autistic characteristics may appear due to overgrown mental spaces in the brain which may bring about high internal attention inclination. The overgrown spaces may provide high facilitation for internal cognitive activities on the one hand, and relative attention deficits to the external space causing poor contextual knowledge and social communication and interaction on the other hand. This paper provides a discussion of why and how the mental spaces grow from the evolutionary perspective and approaches to supporting individuals with autism
