Ready-made Garments (RMGs) industry is one of the Bangladesh’s success stories. Like many developing countries as South Korea has experienced in the sixties, Bangladesh was encouraged since the late seventies into the garments industry. The RMGs in Bangladesh is characterised by small and medium sized privately owned enterprise. The industry has attained phenomenal growth over the past three decades as the sector has been earning millions of dollars by exporting garments. In the context of export oriented industry, the garment industry has expanded very fast under the global competitions especially with China, and in spite of the termination of quota to export to the US since the Jan. 2005. Therefore, the present study is initiated exploring core competencies of ready-made garments in Bangladesh for its sustainable growth of RMG industry. Data were collected through a seven-point Likert type summated rating scales of questionnaire from strongly disagree (-3) to strongly agree (+3) were adopted to explore the competencies. Sophisticated statistical model as exploratory factor analysis (EFA) has been used. The study has identified three core competencies of sustainable industry as the results, which are determined in RMGs manufacturers in Bangladesh. The dominant competencies are demand for work contract, opportunity seeking and risk taking.
