The Development of English Storybook-based Test Items for Childhood English Vocabulary Proficiency

The purpose of this study is to develop an effective type of English vocabulary test items based on an English storybook which is familiar to children. Specifically this study focuses on the process from deciding vocabulary test items by using a computer program that bases its contents on the revised national 7th English curriculum to organizing not only children centered but objective vocabulary test items in an effective way. In this study, a survey was carried out for 50 in-service teachers to understand the teachers' needs. 81% of them were in agreement with the needs for an early childhood English learners' vocabulary test to understand their current proficiency. The study was conducted over four weeks, in a vocabulary-centered literature class of 25 students, located in Gyunggido. by using a storybook, Silly Sally(Wood, 2001) used by the most number of teachers answering the survey. After that we conducted a vocabulary test with developed test items through this research. As a result, highly effective childhood vocabulary test items was developed and their validity reliability were established. Moreover, a discussion of the computer program, its implementation, and how the program might be used to help teachers select vocabulary for testing.
