서양 고지도에 나타난 제주의 지명과 형태

Changing Place Names and Shapes of Jeju Island in Western Old Maps

제주도는 서양에서 제작된 고지도에 한국이 표현되기 시작하는 16세기 중반부터 함께 등장한다. 서양에서 바라본 제주의 명칭은 ‘Ladrones’ ‘Fungma’ ‘Quelpaert’의 순으로 변천되며, 풍마와 켈파트의 병기형, 둘을 서로 다른 섬으로 인식한 병존형 등 다양하다. 19세기가 되면 혼란이 사라지고 켈파트로 정착된다. 제주의 위치도 서남쪽 혹은 동남쪽, 중앙부에 표시되기도 하고, 한반도와 멀리 떨어져 그려지기도 한다. 서양 고지도에 표현된 제주의 위치와 형태는 16세기 후반에는 매우 부정확했다(A-1형). 17세기에는 제주에 대한 인식이 보다 명확해졌으나 여전히 위치 및 형태는 부정확한 유형이다(A-2). 18세기에는 풍마와 켈파트라는 두 지명의 혼용에 따라 제주도의 위치와 형태도 지리적 혼동을 보였다. 풍마 섬만 위치하는 형(A-4), 풍마와 켈파트가 함께 표현되면서 주변에 불명확한 여러 섬들이 함께 그려진 형(B-2-1), 풍마와 켈파트만 표현된 형(B-2-2)의 순으로 점차 정확한 모습으로 정착되어 간다. 특히 1787년 라페루즈의 탐사를 시작으로 19세기에 영국의 맥스웰(M. Maxwell)과 홀(B. Hall), 벨처(E. Belcher) 등이 제주에 대해 본격적인 탐사를 실시하면서, 19세기 서양 고지도에 제주의 위치와 형태는 현대 지도에 가깝게 정확한 형태(C형)로 대부분 표현된다.

Jeju is an island located in the south-west of the mainland of South Korea. Jeju island began to describe in the European old maps made from the mid-16th century when Korea first appeared in them as well. Place name of Jeju changed into 'Ladrones' 'Fungma'and 'Quelpaert'in order by the West, Also, names of three counties like 'kitchew' 'Te-tching' and 'Chany' appeared. The Locations and forms of Jeju Island in the western old maps were very inaccurate in the late 16th century(A-1 type). By the 17th century, cognition of Jeju became more definite, however, its locations and forms were still inaccurately recognized(A-2 type). In the 18th century, the locations and forms of Jeju were geographically confused by mixed use of two place names, Fungma and Quelpaert. It was gradually established accurately in order of A-4 type which only Fungma island was located, B-2-1 type that Fungma and Quelpaert were expressed together with indefinite several islands around and B-2-2 type that only Fungma and Quelpaert were simply expressed without islands. Especially, beginning with an expedition of La P럕ouse in 1787, since M. Maxwell, B. Hall and E. Belcher in the 19th century, most of locations and forms of Jeju in the western old maps were C types similar to modern maps.
