The Leadership of Samuel A. Moffet : the plantation and growth of the Changdaehyon church

  • 158

The present study is to describe the leadership if the missionary Sarmuel A.Moffet(1864-1909), who is one of the great pioneering missionaries in Korea. While he was active for 1893-1909 in the west-northern part of Korea Moffet knew to plant 26 local churches; and serving as the chief of various church-related institutes he had contributed to develop the Korean church. In this study I focus on the way how Moffet had taken the lead while he planted, and developed, the Changdaehyon church, which is the first church at the city of Pyongyang. Religious leadership may be defined as the process by which leaders induce followers to act for certain transcendental goals that embody the values, motivations, and aspirations of bothleaders and followers. The leadership is closely related with imperative-control(herrschaft), which denotes the probability that a command of leaders will be obeyed by a given group of persons. There must be certain motives for a given group of persons to obey a command of leaders. The motives can be given when the command of leaders is the traditionally observed obligation, or is accorded with the legally established norm, and a given group of persons are loyal to leaders by virtue of the exemplary characters of leaders. While he had worked as the pastor of the Changdaehyon church for 14years(1893-1907) Moffet set up the goal to develop this church to an independent local church, which was self-supporting, self-governing, and self-propagating, Moffet had done the following three things to induce Korean followers to act forthis goal. To begin with be tried to create personal trust in himself on the mind of Korean followers. Secondly he trained Korean followers through the Bible Study Class and appointed the well-trained followers to the leaders of the church organization. Thirdly he organized and governed the church following the mission poicy of the council of Missionaries Holding the Presbyterian Form of Government. Moffet was successful in motivating Korean followers to move towards the goal. How far successful Moffet was in doing this was found in the voluntary personal commitment to the goal by Korean followers. More specifically it was visible in the attendance at the Sunday worship and the Bible study Class, the amount of financial offerings, and the increase of the church membership. In 1907 Moffet handed over the pastorship of the changdaeyon church to his close follower, the pastor Kil Son-chu and by the transfer of the pastorship the Changdaehyon church could have become a self-supporting, self-governing, self-propagating church.
