Social welfare and Revival of Church

The purpose of this study is to search for obstacles on social welfare of the churches in Korea. This paper begins with some relationship between social welfare and revival of church, particularly concerning of the revival movement at Pyungyang 1907. This study is based on the history of korean church that is sorted into four obstacles on social welfare of the churches in Korea. Frist, there is a lack of understanding of pastors and lay believers in community churches. Especially religious workers(pasters and evangelists) have only 33.0% an experience of training for social work, during laity have 67.3% an experience. The following statistics state how the role of religious workers is important for social work of church. leadership of religious workers cooperation of Church conference participation of staffs budget of church 41.7% 18.5% 14.7% 11.8% Second, the Korean Church is focused to preference of Church Growth, mammonism. The Korean Church had rapid growth on the 1970's and the 1980’s, supported by the Military Regime President Park. There are the greatest mega Church and some mega Churches in 10th ranking of the world in korea. The Military Regime laid embargo upon every mass meeting and gathering, but only permitted for the christian mass meeting and worship that gathered over one million people at Yeoido Square. The Military Regime supported to preference of large conglomerate and major companies similarly to mega church in order to turn from concern of democracy to religious passions. Third, there is a budget of church which propensity for church and seclusion of church for neighbor and community. The following statistics state how the church has concern and support items of budget. Over 88% of budget consume for church and only 9.22%(including mission) use for neighbor. Korean church should attend to D. Bonhoeffer who wrote in his ‘Entwurf einer Arbeit’ August 1944: “Um einen Angang zu machen, muss sie(die Kirche) alles Eigentum den Notleidenden schenken… sie muss an den weltlichen Aufgaben des menschlichen Gemeinschaftlebens teilnehmen, nicht herrschend, sondern helfend und dienend.” salary of religious management & education & worship mission & evangelism social work & building & the like workers administration welfare 27.28% 26.03% 11.43% 5.34% 3.88% 36.04% Fourth, there is a disunion of Church and theological polarization. About 70% of all korean christians believe in presbyterian, which over 100 denominational are disrupted. Especially ‘National Association of Evangelicals’(NAE) supported the conservative christians, who attacked ecumenical christians as communist. NAE have dualism that discriminate between world and church, person from community, spirit from body. Also conservative christians(over 90% of all christians) distinguish between evangelism and social responsibility, which caused a serious lack of holistic mission and social work(welfare).
