효(孝) 문화의 토착화 방안

A study of Indigenization for 'Hyo' Culture

  • 79

The Purpose of this study is to search for an understanding of the 'Hyo'(obedience for parents) Culture in Korea and to examine some useful missionary strategies which can be used in this culture, This paper begins with a report about some criterions for indigenization, particularly concerning the factor of relationship identity, Also, this paper survey some traditional misunderstandings about the 'Hyo' Culture in Korea, First, Korea regards Christianity as an anti-Hyo religion because Christians reject ancestral rites(Jesha). Particularly many Korean Catholic Christians in the first generation were killed by the government, until the government recognized Catholicism as a Public religion, Secondly, most Korean Protestants regard ancestral rites as a syncretism on Christianity because according to the second command of the decalogue: "You shall not bow down to them" "(Exodus 20:4). Syncretism IS a 'deskriptiv-phanomenologisch' term used in the area of religion: however, this term brings about a negative meaning in the area of theology, Regardless of this fact, Korean Catholicism, under Papst Pius XII, on Dec, 8 1939, recognized the ancestral feast as a contextualization for rites of Christianity, This paper suggests two useful tasks for the indigenization of 'Hyo' in Korea, First, the ceremony of mourning for ancestors(Choodo) in the Korean Church seems to be an insufficient contextualization for the Gospel. For sufficient indigenization, the Korean Church need to exchange the name from Choodo to Choomo(Cherishing one's memory) and then accept the important elements of ancestral rites(Jesha). Secondly, a new formation of theology for 'Hyo missiology' needs to be established that contextualies Hyo, 'Hyo missiology' is a basis of theology for missions that comes from the theology of 'God's mission(missio Dei)', Missio Dei does not orientate itself to the western military mind and culture, but to a servant mind in an indigenous culture according to the cross of Christ, God's mission focuses on the mission of the Holy Sprit, who is the presence of Christ, The commission by Christ follows the promise of the Holy Spirit's presence(John 20:21-22, Acts 1:8), The free action of the Holy Sprit breaks down the walls between culture, religion and nations,
